Vontae Davis career
Vontae Davis, who played in the NFL from 2009 until his retirement in 2018, was a member of the Miami Dolphins, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Buffalo Bills.
Following the news of his passing, tributes started pouring in from each team and the league itself. The NFL expressed its condolences, stating that it is deeply saddened by Vontae Davis’ passing and that their thoughts are with his family and loved ones.
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay also shared his condolences on social media. He posted a picture of Davis in a Colts uniform with a heart emoji above it and wrote, Extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Vontae Davis. A great guy, teammate, player. My prayers to Vontae’s family.
Miami chose Davis as the 25th pick in the first round of the 2009 draft. Before joining the NFL, he played college football at the University of Illinois.
Davis made headlines in 2018 when he decided to retire during halftime of the Bills’ game against the Los Angeles Chargers. He explained his abrupt decision in a statement, saying, This isn’t how I imagined ending my NFL career. But during the game, I realized it was time to step away. I didn’t want to risk my health or let down my teammates and coaches by continuing to play when I knew I shouldn’t be out there anymore.
Vontae Davis visited his school
Davis was twice named to the Pro Bowl.
Tiresias McCall, 46, used to be the dean of students at Dunbar High School in Washington D.C., where Vontae Davis, the football star, also went. They met in 2019 when Davis visited the school to talk about a book. He is the co writer of this book named as “The Middle School Rules of Vontae Davis.”
This book talks about the tough journey Davis had to go through to make it to the NFL. His parents addicted with drugs. So his grandma, Adaline, took him and his siblings in so they wouldn’t end up in foster care.
McCall remembers Davis as a fantastic guy, always speaking passionately and with a big smile. The kids at the school really connected with him, especially those facing similar challenges at home. McCall says Davis was like a role model for them, showing that despite tough beginnings, they could still make something of themselves.
McCall isn’t dwelling on Davis’ death with sadness; instead, he’s celebrating Davis’ life and everything he achieved. He says Davis lived life to the fullest and touched many people’s lives, inspiring them along the way.
Davis had an older brother, Vernon Davis, who also played football for teams like the San Francisco 49ers.
Jim Irsay, the Colts owner, shared on social media, “Vontae Davis was a great guy, teammate, and player. My thoughts are with his family.”
The Bills expressed their sadness in a statement, saying, “We are saddened to hear about Vontae Davis’ passing. Our thoughts are with his friends, family, and loved ones during this tough time.”
