Real Madrid has a really important game coming up the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund. But, they’re also thinking about the future. One player they’re focusing on is Dani Carvajal. He could make history by winning his sixth Champions League title on June 1st.

Real Madrid is considering extending Dani Carvajal’s contract, according to reports from Relevo. The new deal would secure his future with the club until at least 2026, and there’s a chance it could go even further.

Carvajal’s current contract scheduled to end in the summer of 2025. This means that going into the 2024/25 season. So, he’ll only have a year remaining on his current deal unless he signs an extension before then. The club seems keen to keep hold of their experienced right back for the long term.

It’s not uncommon for Real Madrid to extend contracts for key players. But this situation with Dani Carvajal is a bit different. Normally, the club tends to negotiate with veterans over 30 years old during the final year of their contracts.

Currently, players like Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić fall into this category, negotiating with just 12 months left on their deals.

However, with Carvajal, Real Madrid is looking to secure his future well in advance, breaking from their usual practice. This shows the club’s special interest in ensuring Carvajal remains a crucial part of their plans for the long term.

Dani Carvajal might have his future sorted out much sooner than expected. According to the Relevo report, Real Madrid could go against their usual policy and offer him a two-year extension, keeping him at the club until 2027.

This move would break from their typical approach. Which often sees negotiations with older players closer to the end of their contracts. Carvajal could potentially remain a vital part of Real Madrid’s squad until he’s 35 years old if this extension comes through. Which is showcasing the club’s strong belief in his abilities and commitment.

The Spanish player’s fitness has noticeably improved as the season went on. By setting him up perfectly for the big matches, like the upcoming clash against Dortmund in London. This optimal condition is not only beneficial for Carvajal personally. But also for Real Madrid’s chances of success in important games.

However, he’s turned things around remarkably since then. He’s managed to stay relatively injury free and has worked hard to fine tune his fitness to perfection. This season, his injury woes have significantly decreased, with just two games missed due to injury. Which compared to five in the previous season (2022/23).

He emphasized the importance of both physical and mental aspects in preventing injuries. Which suggesting that injuries are often complex and multifactorial.

Carvajal reflected on his past experiences, noting that he faced injury setbacks during critical Champions League matches, which could have had psychological implications. Recalling the challenges of the 2021 season, where he struggled with repeated relapses and a sense of hopelessness, he highlighted the pivotal role of dietary adjustments.

Even though he’s not intolerant to gluten, he recognized its potential to cause inflammation and made the decision to remove it from his diet completely. Since then, he attested that this dietary change has had a transformative effect on his overall well-being and injury resilience.

As time goes on and Carlo Ancelotti gets older, he has the opportunity to groom a younger player as a long term replacement for Carvajal, knowing that Carvajal will need to have his playing time managed.

Currently, and probably for the 2024/25 season, the team will depend on Carvajal and his backup, Lucas Vázquez. Vázquez is likely to renew his contract, which ends this summer, providing a reliable option.

Meanwhile, the club is exploring options for a permanent solution in the long run. This strategy allows for a smooth transition while ensuring the team’s stability in the immediate future.

Dani Carvajal’s Anticipated Leadership Role:

With club captain Nacho set to depart as his contract expires, Dani Carvajal poised to take on the role of the club’s vice-captain. This promotion typically follows the hierarchy of seniority at the club. Furthermore, the captaincy, which often awarded based on tenure, would likely pass on to Luka Modrić.

However, Modrić’s future at the club remains uncertain as his contract also expires this summer. Unless a deal reached before June 30th, Modrić could potentially depart, leaving Carvajal as a key figure in the team’s leadership structure.

Regardless of Modrić’s status, Carvajal expected to frequently lead the team on the field. Especially considering Modrić’s limited appearances this season, having started only 23 out of 53 games.

Similar to Karim Benzema’s role as deputy to Marcelo in his final season, Carvajal is likely to assume the captaincy for numerous matches. This season alone, he has already captained the team in 12 games, despite being third in line for the armband. This showcases Carvajal’s significant presence and influence within the team, making him a natural choice for leadership responsibilities.

Modrić’s departure seems probable, and even if he does decide to stay for the 2024/25 season, Carvajal would likely assume the full captaincy. This transition would mark a significant milestone in Carvajal’s journey with the club.

Interestingly, when the Valdebebas training ground opened in 2004, Carvajal, then just 12 years old, chosen to bury a time capsule there. This small yet symbolic event underscores the remarkable journey of the young boy who grew up to become the club’s captain, highlighting his deep rooted connection with Real Madrid and his evolution into a leader on and off the field.
