Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar Faces Federal Indictment
On Friday, it was reported that a member of the House Democratic caucus, known for being one of the most conservative and the sole opponent of abortion within the caucus, is likely to face indictment by the Department of Justice soon.
U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar responded to these reports by affirming his and his wife’s innocence. He made this statement following rumors that the Justice Department was preparing to announce his indictment.
Cuellar, speaking to Border Report, emphasized, “I want to make it clear that both my wife and I are innocent of these accusations. Every action I’ve taken in Congress has been to serve the people of South Texas.”
Friday morning, NBC News stated that the Department of Justice was likely to announce the indictment of the longtime congressman from Laredo. However, it wasn’t clear if this indictment was connected to the FBI raid at his home in 2022.
In January 2022, a group of FBI agents went to Cuellar’s house. They came to search it as part of an investigation. This investigation was connected to a country called Azerbaijan, which used to be part of the Soviet Union.
The agents looked through Cuellar’s belongings and the different parts of the house to find any evidence or clues related to their investigation. It’s a serious matter when the FBI gets involved in searching someone’s home, indicating they suspect something significant.
Days after the FBI agents searched Cuellar’s home, he took to Twitter to share a video statement. In the one-and-a-half-minute clip, Cuellar addressed the recent events concerning the investigation related to Azerbaijan.
With a calm demeanor, he spoke directly to his followers, expressing his thoughts and feelings about the situation. Cuellar emphasized his cooperation with the authorities and his commitment to transparency throughout the process. He reassured his supporters that he would fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation and hoped for a swift resolution. Cuellar concluded the video by thanking everyone for their continued support and understanding during this challenging time.
Cuellar expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he received through various channels such as calls, texts, tweets, and messages. He felt deeply touched by the outpouring of support from many people in the community.
Cuellar found it humbling to see so many rallying behind him during this challenging time. He wanted to personally extend his thanks to each and every individual who stood by him and had his back. Cuellar acknowledged the significance of having a supportive community during difficult times and appreciated the solidarity shown by those around him.
Cuellar reiterated his previous statement, emphasizing his complete cooperation with law enforcement. He stressed his commitment to upholding justice and the law. Cuellar affirmed that he was actively participating in the investigation process, ensuring full compliance with authorities. He remained confident that the ongoing investigation would ultimately vindicate him, demonstrating that he had not engaged in any wrongful activities.
Cuellar maintained his innocence and expressed his belief that the facts would prove his innocence beyond doubt.
It’s important to note that despite the search of Cuellar’s home and the ongoing investigation, he had not faced any charges related to a crime.
Additionally, the FBI had not disclosed any details about the extent or focus of their investigation into the congressman. This lack of formal charges and public information regarding the investigation underscored the ongoing nature of the situation and the uncertainty surrounding Cuellar’s involvement. It’s a reminder that investigations can be complex and may take time before any conclusions or developments are made public.
In April, Cuellar’s lawyer stated that Cuellar was not the main focus of the investigation.
In his statement on Friday, Cuellar didn’t mention the specific accusations against him and his wife, but he strongly denied any wrongdoing.
Cuellar stated that before he took any action, he made sure to seek legal advice from the House Ethics Committee. He received multiple written opinions from them, as well as an additional opinion from a national law firm. According to Cuellar, the actions he took in Congress were in line with what many of his colleagues had done and were in the best interest of the American people.
Moreover, Cuellar mentioned that he and his team had requested a meeting with the prosecutors in Washington DC to explain the facts from their perspective. However, he expressed frustration as the prosecutors declined to discuss the case with them or to listen to their side of the story.
Cuellar proudly highlighted his wife’s achievements as a businesswoman. He emphasized that she had dedicated her career to various fields, including banking, tax, and consulting. Throughout her professional journey, she had amassed valuable experience and expertise in these areas.
Cuellar wanted to underscore his wife’s successful track record and the contributions she had made in her respective fields. By highlighting her accomplishments, he aimed to showcase her skills and qualifications.
Cuellar vehemently refuted the allegation that his wife was anything other than qualified and hardworking, deeming it both inaccurate and offensive. He emphasized that his wife’s credentials and dedication to her career were unquestionable.
Despite the ongoing challenges and controversies, Cuellar affirmed his intention to continue his campaign for re-election. He expressed confidence in his ability to secure victory in the upcoming November election. Cuellar’s determination to persevere despite the hurdles reflected his steadfast commitment to serving his constituents and representing their interests in Congress.
Cuellar faced no opposition in the Democratic primary for Texas’ 28th Congressional District, securing his party’s nomination uncontested.
On the Republican side, Lazaro Garza Jr. and Jay Furman emerged as the top contenders but neither secured enough votes to clinch the nomination outright. As a result, Garza Jr. and Furman are set to compete in a runoff election to determine the Republican nominee. The winner of this runoff will then face Cuellar in the November general election.
This scenario sets the stage for a showdown between Cuellar, the Democratic incumbent, and either Garza Jr. or Furman, the contenders vying for the Republican nomination. The outcome of the runoff election will determine. Who will challenge Cuellar in the race for the 28th Congressional District seat.
Cuellar acknowledged the toll that the allegations had taken on his family. By describing the situation as difficult for them to endure. However, he expressed optimism and resilience, stating that with the support of prayers, they would overcome the challenges they faced.
Drawing on his upbringing as the son of migrant workers, Cuellar emphasized the values instilled in him from a young age. He recounted the lessons learned about the importance of hard work and determination. Cuellar asserted that throughout his life, he had remained committed to these principles. It is particularly in serving the people of South Texas.
Cuellar outlined his dedication to his constituents. By highlighting his efforts to create job opportunities, enhance education, and address border security concerns in the region. Despite the adversity he faced, Cuellar reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to serving the needs of the community he represented.
