NBA Announced Amazon Over TNT Sports for New Broadcast Deal
The NBA announced on Wednesday that it will leave Warner Bros. Discovery and TNT Sports to sign an 11-year broadcast deal with Amazon.
A Changing Sports Landscape
This year has seen a lot of changes in sports programming on TV with AEW and other sports up for grabs. The NBA’s decades-long relationship with TNT was at risk, with lucrative offers from NBC, ESPN, and Amazon Prime. TNT announced they intended to match Amazon’s offer, citing it as their contractual right. However, the NBA felt the offers from TNT didn’t measure up.
NBA’s New Home with Amazon
Warner Bros. Discovery’s most recent proposal did not match the terms of Amazon Prime Video’s offer, read the NBA’s announcement. We’ve entered into a long-term arrangement with Amazon.
Throughout these negotiations, our primary objective has been to maximize the reach and accessibility of our game for our fans. Our new deal with Amazon supports this goal by complementing. The broadcast, cable, and streaming packages already part of our new Disney and NBCUniversal arrangements.
What Fans Can Expect
According to the NBA’s announcement, Amazon will stream 66 regular-season games on Prime Video each season. This package will include Thursday night double-headers starting in January, Friday evening double-headers, select Saturday afternoon games, and at least one game on Black Friday.
Prime Video is also set to air the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and championship game of the NBA Cup. Additionally, there will be six NBA Play-In games and two Conference finals in six of the 11 years, rotating with NBC starting with the 2026-27 NBA season.
TNT’s Response
In response, TNT Sports stated, We have matched the Amazon offer, as we have a contractual right to do, and do not believe the NBA can reject it. We think they have grossly misinterpreted our contractual rights with respect to the 2025-26 season and beyond, and we will take appropriate action.
Conclusion
The NBA’s decision to partner with Amazon marks a significant shift in its broadcasting strategy. Aiming to expand the game’s reach through a variety of platforms. While TNT Sports is pushing back, the NBA is moving forward with its new plan, promising fans more access to their favorite games through Amazon Prime Video.
