I think we’re both very competitive individuals, Howard Coach Larry Scott said. In that situation, I would have handled it differently. I can’t speak for him. While I have great respect for Coach Schiano and his achievements, as competitors, frustration can arise. I thought it could have been managed better, but that’s his decision. Schiano, on the other hand, offered no apologies for his coaching decisions.

Guys practiced hard all training camp and deserved to play, Schiano said. There was no intent to run up the score. If we wanted to do that, we wouldn’t have used timeouts when we had the ball; we’d have just let the game end. It wasn’t retaliatory. We were going to run plays. We bring a team in here to compete, and we need to win and get reps. The opportunities were there, so we took them.

Howard had called two timeouts on its previous possession and then turned the ball over on downs at its own 31-yard line. On the final two-play drive, Raymond broke several tackles on runs of 20 and 11 yards to score. Schiano praised Scott, calling him a good coach whom he respects.

I’m very comfortable with how we handle our team, including how I handle our team. If I wasn’t I’d tell you, Schiano said.
