Shane Lowry Shines in Second Round at The Open 2024

Former Open champion Shane Lowry surged into the lead with a strong start to his second round on day two. Shane Lowry delivered an impressive performance in the second round of The Open 2024 showcasing his skill and determination. With a strong start the former champion moved into the outright lead setting the stage for an exciting finish.

The Irishman handled the windy conditions on day one well finishing at five under par with no dropped shots. Just one stroke behind surprise leader Dan Brown from England.

Day two started with calm conditions for the early players. But the wind picked up by the time Lowry teed off around 10 a.m. Despite this he made a six foot birdie putt on the first hole to share the lead.

Shane Lowry had birdie opportunities on all four of the opening holes each with its own challenge. At the second hole he had a 30 foot putt after missing the flag. He two putted and stayed at six under par.

Lowry seemed ready to take the lead at the next hole but missed an eight foot putt that he had been making easily on day one. Calmly, he made up for it with a birdie on the fourth hole reaching seven under and taking a one stroke lead.

Lowry, who won five years ago at Portrush said: There are three rounds left. If I don’t play well today’s score won’t matter. I’m here to have a chance to win again and this is a great start. Its tough to get to the front and once you’re there you have to keep pushing and see where it takes you by the weekend.

Germany’s Marcel Siem had a strong start with five birdies in his first eight holes. However, he double bogeyed the ninth and added three more bogeys on the back nine which was difficult for many players.

Another former Open champion Darren Clarke improved after an opening day 77 gaining three shots in his first five holes. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods had a double bogey on the second hole and went ten shots over par.

The forecast predicted a dry day but with strong winds expected to cause problems especially in the early afternoon as they did the day before.

McIlroy, starting later in round two hoped to improve after a tough first day. In round one the four time Major champion had only one birdie and struggled from the eighth hole losing five shots in four holes with double bogeys on the eighth and 11th.

He ended his round with a bogey on the 18th and another shot lost on the 15th finishing the day at seven over par and struggling to make the cut. Looking ahead to the weekend he said, I need to play better to make it through. The conditions should be similar to today.

I need to handle the conditions better and play well to shoot under par. I want to make it to the weekend and move up the leaderboard to give myself a chance.

Looking back on a tough first day he said, I felt okay early in the round but I was surprised at how hard the back nine was. I thought it would be easier. The course was tough and I didn’t adapt well to the conditions.
