Shemar James Highlights His Progress and Ron Roberts
Junior linebacker Shemar James joined quarterback Graham Mertz and Montrell Johnson to represent the Florida Gators at SEC Media Days for the first time. Standing 6’1″ and weighing 235 pounds, James has already made a vast impact in Gainesville, playing in 21 games and starting 12 over two seasons.

Strong Performance and Injury Comeback
Starting his third season as a key participant on Florida’s defense, James had an impressive 12 months in 2023 with 55 tackles, five. 5 tackles for loss, and one sack in just 8 games earlier an injury sidelined him for the relaxation of the season.
Reflecting on his progress, James shared, “I’ve been operating on getting more potent, turning into a better leader, and improving my conversation on the field. The injury and surgery helped me see the game differently. I learned more about how things work off the field and spent time coaching younger players and boosting their confidence.”

New Additions and Leadership
In 2024, Florida’s linebacker group will see new players and leadership. James highlighted the improvements, “Our skills have improved a lot. We added Pup Howard and freshmen Myles Graham and Aaron Chiles. We have a lot of talented and experienced players like me, Derek Wingo, and Ronald Moten. So, we’ve gotten better in both skills and leadership.”
The Impact of Coach Ron Roberts
The Gators have also welcomed Ron Roberts, a former Auburn defensive coordinator. As their linebackers coach, co-defensive coordinator, and executive head coach. Players appreciate the energy Roberts brings to practice.
James remarked, “Coach Roberts has brought a lot of experience and personality to our team. He works hard daily and teaches us to focus on one day at a time and be intentional with our efforts.”

Shemar James is a key player in a linebacker unit that will depend on some younger players in 2024. His leadership and experience will be crucial as the Gators look to make their mark in the upcoming season.
