Stephon Castle is thrilled to team up with Victor Wembanyama
Right after joining the San Antonio Spurs on draft night. Stephon Castle got a video call from Victor Wembanyama the reigning rookie of the year. Wembanyama introduced himself and Castle the No. 4 pick in the draft chuckled and said he already knew who Wembanyama was.
During his time chasing a national championship with UConn. Last season Castle recalled watching Wembanyama’s rookie year and imagining playing alongside him.
The idea of teaming up with him crossed my mind a lot but it didn’t feel real until now Castle. He said at his introductory press conference on Saturday morning. Knowing he’ll be my teammate soon I’m excited about what lies ahead for us.
Stephon Castle departed UConn after his freshman year contributing to their national championship win. During his time there he played alongside Donovan Clingan a 7 foot 3 center drafted seventh overall by the Portland Trail Blazers. Now Castle looks forward to connecting with an even larger teammate on the court.
It was fun tossing lobs to DC. Castle remarked. I can only imagine what it’ll be like throwing them to Wembanyama. He also noted the difference in rim protection between the two big men allowing him to be more aggressive on defense.
While he enjoyed playing with Clingan Castle. Is intrigue by the prospect of playing alongside probably the best shot blocker in the league now.
During the pre draft process Castle expressed his desire to join a team where he could play as a point guard. Standing at 6 foot 5 without shoes at the combine Castle still aims for that role but acknowledges the importance of having versatility across positions.
I feel most comfortable there but my year at UConn expanded my off ball skills and showcased my entire game Castle explained. He believes he’s a perfect fit for the Spurs’ offense.
Stephon Castle was introduce on Saturday alongside the Spurs’ second round pick Harrison Ingram. Juan Nunez drafted at No. 36 wasn’t present as he’s in Spain training with the national team.
At UConn Castle played under Dan Hurley known as one of the top coaches in college basketball. Now he’ll have the opportunity to learn from Gregg Popovich the NBA’s winningest coach of all time.
Playing for Coach Pop feels surreal Castle expressed. Transitioning from one of the best college basketball coaches to a legendary figure like Coach Pop feels like the perfect fit for me.
Being in this position playing for two high level coaches is something any basketball player dreams of. I’m eager to learn from him play under his guidance and see how much I can grow.
