Vampire Weekend Makes Baio’s ‘Real Housewives’ Dream a Reality at Kilby

Last Friday, on May 10, Vampire Weekend headed to Utah State Fairpark in Salt Lake City as part of their Only God Was Above Us tour. Which landing a prime spot at the Kilby Block Party festival.

Throughout their performance, which consisted of a single set, the band delved into their extensive discography. Which making sure to highlight tracks from their 2008 self-titled debut album. As well as tunes from Modern Vampires of the City, and their latest collection released in 2024, which the tour named after.

Staying true to their signature style, the band incorporated a mix of fun. And fame into their show by featuring a game of cornhole alongside a special guest appearance.

This time, they brought out none other than Heather Gay, a star from the reality TV series Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. Bassist Chris Baio extended the invitation to Heather, adding an extra layer of excitement to the already buzzing atmosphere.

The idea of having a crossover between the band and a reality TV personality was sparked during Vampire Weekend’s. “Vampire Campfire Episode 2,” a video released on March 25, 2024, on YouTube. By titled “The Waldorf Astoria Bathroom (with Josh Goldsmith).”

In this video, lead singer Ezra Koenig posed a question, asking. “What’s so special about Real Housewives of Salt Lake City?” Bassist Chris Baio reacted with a sigh. By choosing not to answer directly.

Instead, he turned the moment into an opportunity, extending an invitation. “If you are a member of the cast of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Heather, Whitney, Lisa, Meredith, Angie K., and yes, Monica. If you have any interest in going to an indie rock festival in your town of Salt Lake City. We are playing Kilby Block Party in the second week of May.”

This playful exchange between the band members hinted at the possibility of a collaboration with a Real Housewives star during their performance at the Kilby Block Party. It added an element of anticipation and excitement for both fans of Vampire Weekend and followers of the reality TV series.

As anticipated, Heather Gay made a surprise appearance during Vampire Weekend’s performance at the Kilby Block Party. Stepping in front of the cheering crowd, she asserted her presence, saying, “Hi Salt Lake City! I am here as your official Housewives representative if you will have me.” It was a moment of excitement and connection between the band, the audience, and the local community.

The interaction between Gay and the band mirrored their playful spirit seen previously at Coachella. Where chief reality star Paris Hilton joined them on stage alongside an Abe Lincoln impersonator for a game of cornhole.

Similarly, at Kilby Block Party, Gay’s participation in the game was accompanied by the band’s performance of the up-tempo track, “Campus.” This combination of music and entertainment created a memorable and lively atmosphere. By blending the worlds of indie rock and reality TV in a unique and enjoyable way for everyone present.

Before Heather Gay‘s arrival, Vampire Weekend invited another fan from the audience to join them on stage. Even though they didn’t have reality star status. This lucky fan got the chance to play the piano alongside the band. During their performance of the song “Connect” from their album “Only God Was Above Us.”

It was a special moment that showcased the band’s connection with their fans and their willingness to involve them in their live shows.

Adding to their eventful weekend, on May 11, the band made a highly anticipated return to Stage 8H for their appearance on Saturday Night Live. Hosted by former cast member Maya Rudolph, the show featured sketches and comedy routines interspersed with musical performances.

Vampire Weekend treated the audience to two songs from their 2024 collection, namely “Gen-X Cops” and “Capricorn.” Their energetic and captivating performances on the iconic SNL stage were a highlight of the evening, further solidifying their status as one of the most exciting acts in contemporary music.
