On Monday, Duke Athletics revealed its exciting plan to upgrade the field at Brooks Field within Wallace Wade Stadium.

Starting in May, the Blue Devils will be putting in artificial grass that matches the color of Duke Blue. It’s expected to take about two months to finish the project. The grand unveiling of the new field will be on Friday, August 30, just in time for the Blue Devils’ season opener against Elon.

Beginning in May, the Blue Devils will install artificial grass in Duke Blue color. They estimate that the project will take two months to complete. The grand debut will be on Friday, Aug. 30, when the Blue Devils host Elon for their season opener.

The stadium opened in 1929 as the first athletics facility on Duke’s West Campus. Initially named Duke Stadium, it was later renamed in 1967 to honor former Blue Devil head coach Wallace Wade. In 2015, Brooks Field was dedicated to alumnus Steve Brooks and his wife, Eileen.

The venue underwent its only other renovation in history through a three-phase plan, commencing after the conclusion of the 2014 season and finishing before the 2017 season. During this prior renovation, the playing surface was lowered by seven feet, and the surrounding track was removed. An LED videoboard was also installed. Additionally, Duke constructed the Blue Devil Tower, a 97,160-square-foot facility featuring club and suite seating, along with a press box.
