Royal Troon’s Fury: The Day Canadian Golfers Struggled
TROON, Scotland Corey Conners had high hopes Canadian Golfers at the Open Championship, but his dreams fell apart on the seventh hole during Saturday’s round at Royal Troon. Starting the day in a strong position, Conners quickly found himself struggling.
Triple Bogey Trouble
Things went awry for Conners on the par-4 seventh hole. A rare mishit with his iron off the tee led to a series of unfortunate events, ending in a triple bogey. It’s certainly the shot I would love to have over, Conners admitted. Standing at one-under for The Open championship, his Claret Jug dreams were still alive until that disastrous hole.
Bad Luck Strikes
In addition Conners tried to play it safe with a three-iron, but the golf gods had other plans. I just really bladed a three-iron trying to guide one down the fairway, it flew low, he explained.
Moreover, His ball ended up in a patch of coastal sand, 152 yards from the tee, after an unexpected bounce. I don’t know exactly what it hit, he said. But it ended up way behind and right of the line I thought. I think it might have hit one of the posts holding up a rope or something.
More Misfortune
Things only got worse from there. Conners’ next shot landed in a gorse bush, resulting in a lost ball and penalty stroke. His second attempt from the sand was better, but the damage was done.
Furthermore, The triple bogey seven changed into observed through a bogey at the eighth, any other on the 9th and a double bogey at the 10th after dropping every other ball to the gorse.
Brutal Conditions
Conners wasn’t the only one struggling. Heavy rain and strong winds made Royal Troon a nightmare for many players. Mackenzie Hughes, another Canadian Golfers, faced similar challenges, ending his round with a four-over 75 and dropping from 13th to 40th.
It was that kind of rain and then the wind on that back nine was all into our face Hughes said. We were hitting three-woods into par-fours. It was pretty much playing impossible.
Wind Woes
Conners and Hughes were both shock by the severity of the wind. At least Conners lost another ball on the 10th hole due to a misjudged three-wood shot. I hit three wood on my target it just carried 230 yards and ended up in the bush Conners said. I smoked my drive he added.
A Day to Forget
In the end, Royal Troon tested and bested many players, but Conners and Hughes had a particularly tough day. Reflecting on his difficult round, Hughes said, I didn’t wear rain pants, and I’m soaking wet. My pants are just absolutely drench. Yeah, that was a tough day.
Golf can be cruel, and Saturday at Royal Troon was a harsh reminder for Conners and Hughes.
